It's not surprising that Amalfi has such treasures as this considering that it was one of the four powerful Maritime republics that in the middle ages (839-1135AD) established relationships with other peoples and regions as well as the Orient. For all you history or church nuts out there It includes the "Cloister of Paradise", the Basilica of the , which houses a beautiful museum and last but not least "The Crypt of St Andrew" oh yeah and the Cathedral also. There are mixtures of Moorish, Greek and Byzantine influences in the style of this building and everywhere you look there are frescoes and art works adorning the ceilings and walls.
The Crypt is the heart of Amalfi as it houses the Head and the bones of St Andrew, Jesus first disciple. He was crucified in Patras and his remains were brought first to Constantinople and finally to Amalfi. The Cathedral above the crypt is a great example of Baroque styling.
So many churches so much power and suffering however this is one of a very few of these monuments that I have entered that truly swell the emotions and it is a must see if possible.
