Logroño is the capital of the La Rioja region of Spain famous for its wonderful wine and great Tapas bars that can be found in the side streets just behind the obvious tourist cafe's. There are several incredible 10th and 11th century Romanesque and Gothic churches and the city itself is a blend of Modern meets medievil. However on closer inspection it appears as if this lovely city is locked in the 1970's which is not to unusual for parts of northern Spain. Im getting a little lazy when it comes to photographing these impressive religious monuments," you know " after your first 1000 medieval churches its hard to get excited enough to take happy snaps. Its funny how the most impressive buildings in all the cities i travel through are most often Banks or Churches! Logroño was an old settlement, first of the Romans, under the name of Vareia, a commercial port, and then of the Celts. From the 10th century, possession of Logroño was disputed between the kings of Navarre and those of Castile; the region was finally annexed to Castile. Alfonso VI of Castile granted Logroño in 1095 a charter of rights that served as a model for other Spanish cities.
